Looking for a great way to unwin(e)d while visiting the Grand Strand? Visit one of the Myrtle Beach area’s favorite attractions, Duplin Winery, voted Best Wine Tasting Bar by MyrtleBeach.com. Though you wouldn’t think of the Myrtle Beach area as wine country, we do have our own signature wine in this part of the world–sweet muscadine wine, made from the muscadine grape. The muscadine grape is native to the Southeastern United States and found primarily in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, and Florida. Muscadine grapes are larger than average grapes with a much thicker skin as well. They are known for their sweet taste and strong aromatics. There are red and white varieties, but all are generally served chilled unlike most reds which are served room temperature.
Originally out of Rose Hill, NC, Duplin Winery, a three generation, family-owned winery, has been producing muscadine wines since the 1970s. In 2015, Duplin brought their delicious wine to the Myrtle Beach area with the opening of their second location. The winery offers a variety of muscadine wines such as; sweet reds, sweet whites and a dry Burgundy. Some of their award-winning Carolina wines include Magnolia, featured in Martha Stewart Living as a favorite summertime wine, Hatteras Red, a North Carolina favorite, and Scuppernong, America’s oldest wine. Situated right on Highway 17 just as you enter North Myrtle Beach and in front of Barefoot Landing, Duplin Winery offers daily tastings, special events, tours, a cafe and a gift shop selling wine and wine accessories and other local items to take home with you or even back to your hotel room.
A new favorite at Duplin Winery is the Sweetzer mix. Sweetzer is a specially designed mix specifically made to blend with corresponding Duplin wines and create a sweet, frozen treat–a wine slushie, if you will. What a great way to enjoy the already delicious Duplin wines!
A day spent at Duplin Winery may include educating yourself on their wine-making procedures, watching the bottling process, and shopping in the gift shop. Of course the best part of the Duplin Winery experience is just enjoying live music in the courtyard or or a nice breeze on the front porch sitting one of their many rocking chairs, all while sipping your favorite Duplin wine selection.
